Aces & Spades
Fishing License Bait
The smell. The smell. Olfactory hell
is pungent proof the sea’s unwell.
Tilapia breed like aquatic bunnies,
eating algae, their milk and honey,
then die from lack of oxygen
beneath the blazing summer sun.
Their carcasses wash up on beaches,
swarming flies latch on like leeches,
spreading botulism day by day
to birds on the Pacific Flyway.
Strange misfortune, sent to baffle
the world’s former fishing capital!
The murky brine, laced with dross
from agricultural runoff
may not be quite 100 proof
but it qualifies as toxic soup.
